🌱 The Allium Family

What Are Alliums?

Alliums are a group of vegetables and herbs known for their strong aroma and bold flavor. They grow from bulbs or underground stems and are kitchen staples around the world.

The allium family includes:

  • 🧅 Onions (Allium cepa)
  • 🧄 Garlic (Allium sativum)
  • 🌿 Leeks (Allium ampeloprasum var. porrum)
  • 🌱 Chives (Allium schoenoprasum)
  • 🧄 Shallots (Allium cepa var. aggregatum)
  • 🌿 Green Onions / Scallions (Allium fistulostum)

They belong to the genus Allium and are part of the Amaryllis family (Amaryllidaceae).

Minnesota’s cold winters and shorter growing season make alliums some of the best and most reliable crops for home gardens. Many alliums are frost-tolerant and thrive in cool spring and fall weather.

Soil & Fertility

Alliums prefer:

  • Soil pH: 6.0–7.0
  • Good drainage
  • Steady nitrogen early in growth
